Whats so important about Vitamins?

  In our childhood, we all might have got reprimanded by our mothers, scrutinising our dinner plates and saying sternly quickly finish up your salad its full of vitamins!

And when we grow up our Doctors keep reminding us do not forget to take your daily dose of vitamins!
Some of us still wonder what is so special about them that everyone keeps emphasising on the importance of their consumption?!
Vitamins (and also minerals) are micro substances found in the food items we consume. They help the body to do its daily functions and help you grow healthy and in an appropriate way.
They are of different types, with each having an important role to play. They are present in different forms and quantities in different food items. Thus, that is the reason why everyone advices us to eat a balanced diet, so that we do not miss out on any of them!
For example: Milk contains Vitamin D that makes our bones strong, oranges and other citrus fruits contain Vitamin C that increases our bodys healing powers, B vitamins present in green leafy vegetables provides us with proteins and energy.
Types:
Vitamins are of two types: Water Soluble and Fat Soluble Vitamins.
The Fat Soluble ones gets stored in our Liver and fat tissues. These are stored to be used at the time when our body requires them. These can stay stored for few days and sometimes even up to six months! When the body requires them, then a special carrier in the body takes them to where they are required. Vitamin A, D, E and K fall under the Fat Soluble category.
The Water soluble ones do not get stored in our body. When we consume food that is rich in water soluble vitamins, they flow through our body via the blood stream. Whichever body part or organ requires them, they are used there. The rest, unused ones, are passed out of the body system when we urinate.
As they do not get stored, we need to restore them daily with proper consumption of food rich in them. The group of Vitamin B B1 Thiamine, B2 Riboflavin, Niacin, B6 Pyroxide, B12 Cobalamine, Biotin, Folic acid and Panthothenic acid and Vitamin C falls under this category.

Our body is self sufficient and capable of meeting all its needs. However, except one thing. Our body cannot produce vitamins to meet its needs.
Our body extracts them from different food we eat. Thus, to get proper quantity of vitamin A to K, we need to add a variety of healthy food in our meas.

7Vitamin B Seafood, fish, whole grains, eggs, dairy products, poultry products, etc
8Vitamin C Citrus fruits like oranges, strawberries, broccoli, cabbage, etc
9Vitamin D milk, fish, egg yolks, liver, etc
10Vitamin E nuts, egg yolks, green vegetables, etc
11Vitamin K soybean oil, broccoli, green vegetables, etc
